What does the city sound like at night?
At night all you can hear is birds chirping and the wind blowing through the trees. Also you can see
cars doing burnouts and cars racing. You can also hear the crunching of the branches when you walk
in the parks. You can also see people going for walks. You can hear the flickering of the lights and if it's
raining you hear the rain hitting the ground and the car tyres squeaking on the wet and if there is a storm
in the city you can hear the thunder and the wind whistling in between the trees and buildings. I can also
hear myself thinking about stuff in my head.

Math - Ratio
We are learning about ratio and proportion. First of all we are learning about ratio's.Today for Nogo's math group we
went out to the car park and started counting the cars, SUV, trucks and others to put them into a ratio. This came to a ratio 25:12:3:1.
Then we had to find the ratio of white cars to red cars, Which was 11:3
The total number of vehicles in the car park altogether came to 41.
Then we came back and started working it out. Then we had to put them into a fraction. e.g. 25/41, 12/41, 3/41, 1/41.

Labour Day In New Zealand
The reason why we have Labour Day in New Zealand as a holiday is because in the olden days, they use to work 60 hours a week and they had no time to have a break and spend with their family.
Samuel Parnell started this holiday on the 28 October 1890.
Today people only work a 40 hour week and get to spend time with family and friends.

Maths & Fractions
For maths I have been learning about fractions.
The breakdown of a fractions is:- 1/4 1=numerator 4=denominator this means that it is one part out of four.
We have been learning about equivalent, proper and improper and mixed fractions.
Improper fraction = 16/5 the numerator is larger than the denominator
Proper fraction = 1/2
Mixed fraction = 3 1/4 is a whole number and a fraction
Equivalent fraction is 2/8 = 1/2, 3/6 = 1/2, 3/9 = 1/3
Equivalent fractions are fractions with different numbers representing the same part of a whole. They have different numerators and denominators, but their fractional values are the same.

The shortest day of the year
Yesterday is the shortest day or the longest night of the year. Is this year's winter solstice? The number of daylight hours on the shortest day amounts to 7 hours, 49 minutes and 42 seconds - some 8 hours, 48 minutes and 38 seconds shorter than the summer solstice, when daylight hours are at a maximum. Since the sun is on the north side of the world here in New Zealand the sun is on the other side of the world so for us we get less daylight.

New Zealand history
Who was Kupe?
According to some tribal narratives, Kupe was the first Polynesian to discover the
islands of New Zealand. His journey there was triggered by difficulties with fishing in Hawaiki, his homeland. Kupe set out in his canoe to kill the octopus, and such was the length of the pursuit that it brought him to New Zealand. In some traditional stories Aotearoa was the name of the canoe waka of the explorer Kupe and he named the land after it. Kupe's wife Kuramārōtini in some versions his daughter was watching the horizon and called He ao! He ao a cloud! a cloud .
According to many Māori iwi tribes Kupe was the first Polynesian to arrive in Aotearoa New Zealand over 1,000 years ago. While stories differ from region to region, we explore the tradition and the anchor stone that is featured in our current exhibition Here Kupe to Cook.
What year was the NZ National anthem sung in Te Reo Maori?
In 1976 a petition was presented to Parliament, and the song became a national anthem in 1977. In the 2000s people often sang a verse in Māori and then a verse in English. They white the maori national anthem in maori because they thought that the New Zealanders cannot pronounce it in Maori.
Who is Dame Whina Cooper ONZ DBE?
Dame Whina Cooper ONZ DBE 9 December 1895 26 March 1994 was a respected kuia Māori elder who worked for many years for the rights of her people and particularly to improve the lot of Māori women. She led the land march that stemmed from concerns over the historic sale of Māori land and the desire to retain control of land still in Māori hands. Fifty marchers left Te Hāpua in the far north on 14 September for the 1000-km walk to Wellington. Led by 79 year old Cooper the hīkoi quickly grew in strength.
What did the Polynesian Panthers do?
Founded by a group of young Polynesians on 16 June 1971 the Panthers worked to aid in community betterment through activism and protest education, legal aid and other social resources. The name has since been adopted by an activist group continuing to fight for human rights in New Zealand. Dawn Raids?
How did the Polynesian Panthers help the Dawn Raids?
The Panthers' lead function was to raise consciousness and ensure community wellbeing in response to racial discrimination, prejudice and social inequality faced by indigenous Māori citizens and Pacific Islanders. In 1971 a group of young gang members and students set up the Polynesian Panthers to stand up for the

Tetahi
At the beach the dark sky was like a raging storm that was angry with the world. The sand was coarse like sandpaper beneath my feet. I was in bliss, the day seemed to be going my way. The waves going up and down on the sand were like a yo-yo on an endless string with dumping waves crashing onto the rocks and sand. The wind whistled a tune that I could hardly recognise and the seagulls were talking to me in squawk language.
Here is a link to my planning

Literacy reflection
This week we have been doing focusing of strong paragraphs. We had to paragraphs in 4 sections 1st section is the blue is the first idea and the concluding sentence. The red color is the second part the story red means what can you feel, taste, see, smell, touch and what happened. After for the last bit of the story is blue for the end of the story, a concluding sentence. My previous blogs give examples of this.
Maths.
Yesterday my math group did some quick 10 just to remember what we have been doing from our last session. For our math we did 9 times tables, decimal, place value and some more advanced basic facts. After the quick ten we move on to sum dog which is a math game.
Nogo showed us the trick for the 9 times table.
e.g. 9 x 5 =
You subtract 5-1 which equals 4 then you add up 4 to make 9 which is 5.
9 x 5 = 4+5
9 x 5 = 45

My weekend: Strong paragraph. Using coded colours.
On Sunday I went to see my mum at rehab. My auntie dropped my sister and I off.
When I got there we weren't allowed to bring anything into the rehab. When we got into the rehab I gave my mum a hug then we started to talk about stuff, like how I am doing and what is school like?
My little brother was with the other kids, and after we finished talked my mum, sister, brother, auntie, and I went outside to see the goat. The goat belonged to the rehab place, it looked old and it smelt paru. The goat had white fur with large antlers. The goat's name was Garry. When we were watching the goat it broke threw the fence, pushing its way through the wire. The supervisors had to go and chase Garry the goat around the centre, the visit was over.
Another Sunday visit done. I felt sad as there wasn't enough time.
I gave my mum a hug and then we left. My sister and I got dropped off at my dads house.

Cultures in NZ
. Maori
. British
. Kauai gum digger
. Chinese
.Scandinavian
. Pacific Islander
The Maori came to New Zealand because they wanted a better life.
Scottish,Welsh,Irish,British Thoth language came to New Zealand at 1769-1839 they moved to new Zealand because they wanted there own land.
Kauri gum digger were mostly Dalmatians up north in 1885 because they wanted to get rich.
The Chinese moved to New Zealand because they we immigrate were invited to New Zealand from the the Dunedin's chamber of commerce to replace the western goldmines. Who had followed the gold - fever to Australia however, the produce against the Chinese eventually led to calls for restrictions on immigration.
This is why the Scandinavians moved over to New Zealand, The first few families were attracted to their compatriots in the Manawatu, where they helped to establish Palmerston North. Scandinavians were also in demand for those isolated settlements which several of the provincial governments had established in such places as Stewart Island and Jackson Bay.
The reasons why the Pacific Islanders moved over to New Zealand, After the Second World War, close links, job opportunities and population pressure on some islands led many Pacific people to migrate to New Zealand. During the 1970's the government clamped down on people overstaying their visas, particularly targeting Pacific Islanders.
